Once the meeting starts, Toastmasters will deliver prepared speeches, while others will evaluate using speech criteria, such as time and the misuse of filler words. Speakers receive encouraging feedback following the presentation.

After scheduled speeches, time is set aside for Table Topics®––whereby Toastmasters are called upon or can volunteer to give an impromptu two-minute speech in response to a spontaneous topic. Similar to prepared speeches, Table Topics are evaluated in a supportive environment.

history

While working with the YMCA in 1905, founder Ralph C. Smedley saw a need for individuals in the community to learn how to speak, conduct meetings, plan programs and work on committees, so he formed a club to help them learn these skills in a social environment. As word spread, groups in other areas requested to open their own clubs. By 1930, the initiative had grown to 30 clubs in the United States and Canada, and Toastmasters International was born.

Today, Toastmasters International is a worldwide nonprofit educational organization that empowers individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders. Headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, the organization's membership exceeds 357,000, with over 16,600 clubs in 143 countries.
